Fiat Chrysler has announced a recall of 4.8 million vehicles after it discovered a malfunction that could prevent drivers from turning off cruise control.

The company found that a short circuit may trigger when drivers accelerate the vehicle under cruise control, which may be necessary to maintain speed while driving up a hill. The malfunction causes the affected cars to lock in cruise control, even when drivers try the usual methods for exiting it, like tapping their breaks or hitting a designated switch. With this defect, drivers are still able to slow down and stop their car by hitting the breaks, shifting into neutral, or both.

The following car models are including in the recall:

• 2015-17 Chrysler 200 sedan

• 2014-18 Chrysler 300 sedan

• 2014-18 Dodge Charger sedan

• 2014-18 Dodge Durango SUV

• 2014-18 Dodge Journey crossover

• 2014-18 Jeep Cherokee SUV

• 2014-18 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV

• 2014-18 Ram 2500 pickup

• 2014-18 Ram 3500 cab chassis

• 2014-18 Ram 3500 pickup

• 2014-18 Ram 4500/5500 cab chassis

• 2014-19 Ram 1500 pickup

• 2015-18 Dodge Challenger coupe

• 2017-18 Chrysler Pacifica minivan

• 2018 Jeep Wrangler

There has been one report of an incident related to this problem, but there have been no injuries so far. According to the Associated Press, the driver was allegedly operating a 2017 Dodge Journey SUV rental at about 70 miles per hour with the cruise control on when he says the windshield wipers began operating unprompted and the throttle locked up.

He was able to slam on the breaks and pull over to the side of the rode, but wrote in a complaint filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the car “was still running at an engine speed to support 70 mph and fighting the brakes.”

Fiat Chrysler is urging owners to avoid using cruise control and to bring their vehicles to the nearest dealership as soon as possible for a no-cost software update to fix the problem. The company plans to begin notifying customers with affected models directly, as early as next week.
