The West Paw Toppl Large is appealing when an owner wants a food toy that is easy to fill and can change roles over time. Used alone, it offers an open container for a planned portion. Paired with a compatible size, it becomes a more enclosed dispensing puzzle. That flexibility is the main reason to choose it over a simpler bowl.
The Large measures 3.5 by four by 3.5 inches and has a listed capacity of three-quarters of a cup. West Paw uses its Zogoflex material and places Toppl in its moderate-chewer category. Capacity describes the container, not the amount a particular dog should receive; portion choice still comes from the dog’s established feeding plan.
What the design changes
The open format gives the owner room to decide how difficult the activity should be. The manufacturer supports filling and freezing appropriate wet treats. A frozen filling may require more preparation and washing than dry food, so the best routine is one the household can repeat without turning a small enrichment activity into an elaborate kitchen project.
Two sizes can twist together: Small with Large, or Large with Extra Large. This creates a reason to buy an additional piece only after the dog has shown interest in the basic toy. Starting with one Large keeps the initial decision simpler and avoids paying for a combination that may not fit the dog’s preferred style of interaction.
The practical tradeoffs
Top-rack dishwasher compatibility is a meaningful ownership advantage for a food-contact toy. Inspect and rinse the interior before cleaning so stuck food does not remain out of sight. West Paw also offers a recycling program for its toys; check the program’s current return instructions rather than assuming this material belongs in a local curbside bin.
Chewing behavior remains more important than an enthusiastic product description. The manufacturer says to supervise use, select an appropriate size and discontinue use if damage occurs. The Large is not automatically the correct choice for every large dog, and a moderate-chewer classification should not be stretched into a claim of indestructibility.
Buying judgment
Toppl Large is a strong fit for an owner who wants one reusable food toy with several practical configurations and straightforward cleaning. It is less compelling for someone who only needs a plain feeding bowl or whose dog persistently tries to destroy food toys. Buy the first size around fit and routine, then consider an interlocking companion if it adds a useful new activity.
