EDITORIAL STANDARDS
Clear reasoning.
Useful ratings.
What a rating means
Our five-star ratings are editorial judgments about how well a product serves its intended buyer. Each review displays its criteria, scores, weights and reasoning. Features, design, versatility and ownership considerations may be assessed differently by product category.
The overall score is the weighted average of the displayed criterion scores, rounded to one decimal place. A product with four criteria weighted 25% each and scores of 4.5, 4.0, 4.0 and 3.5 receives 4.0 out of 5. A high score does not mean a product is best for every person.
The scale
5: Exceptional suitability with very few relevant compromises. 4: Strong choice with identifiable tradeoffs. 3: Useful for a narrower set of needs. 2: Significant limitations. 1: Poor fit for the stated use.
Evidence and scope
Review conclusions distinguish documented product features, the experience described in the article, and editorial interpretation. Manufacturer specifications are attributed to their sources. Editorial scores are not laboratory measurements, safety certifications, or a prediction of every buyer’s experience. Category criteria should be considered alongside the verdict and limitations.
Independence
Advertising does not purchase a rating or determine a verdict. Sponsored articles and placements are labeled. Material commercial relationships and affiliate links must be disclosed where they appear.
