The Makita XDT20Z is a compact impact driver aimed at buyers who value fastening control within the 18V LXT system. It offers four speed selections plus application modes rather than relying only on a trigger and maximum torque claim. That makes it worth considering when the work includes different screw types and materials.

Makita lists 1,590 inch-pounds maximum torque, up to 3,600 RPM and a 4.5-inch body length. The torque number describes the tool’s rated capability, not the torque automatically delivered to each fastener. For assemblies requiring a specified final torque, an appropriate measuring tool and procedure remain necessary.

What the design changes

Assist Mode starts more slowly, while two tightening modes address self-drilling screws in different metal thicknesses. These features are designed to help control the fastening sequence. They still depend on choosing the correct mode, bit and fastener, so a buyer who never changes settings may gain less from this model than the feature list suggests.

The LED ring illuminates the work area from around the nose, a practical advantage where a single light can leave shadows. The short body also helps in restricted spaces, but the installed bit and battery add to the real working envelope. Measure access with those components in mind rather than using bare-body length alone.

The practical tradeoffs

TheZ designation is a tool-only purchase: battery and charger are separate. Existing LXT owners have a clearer value proposition than someone building a new system for one project. Compare a kit if starting from scratch, and verify compatibility with the batteries specified by Makita rather than assuming every 18V pack fits.

This is an impact driver with a 1/4-inch hex chuck, not a general-purpose drill with a three-jaw chuck. It complements a drill for fastening work and requires appropriate accessories. A household mainly drilling clean holes or working on very delicate fasteners should decide whether a drill-driver remains the more useful first purchase.

Buying judgment

The XDT20Z is a strong choice for frequent fastening where compact access, illumination and mode selection will actually be used. It is less persuasive if the job rarely extends beyond a few ordinary screws. Buy the controls and LXT compatibility, with the maximum figures treated as context rather than a reason to overpower every task.
