The RYOBI PCL406B is a sensible sanding add-on for a household already using 18V ONE+ batteries. The absence of a power cord makes it easier to move around a small outdoor project or a piece positioned away from an outlet. That convenience is the central reason to choose it over a similarly sized corded sander.
RYOBI specifies a 5-inch hook-and-loop pad,10,000 OPM and a 3/32-inch orbit. The listed speed is a fixed operating specification rather than a broad adjustable range. Someone who expects to tune speed for several delicate materials should compare a variable-speed alternative before deciding that cordless operation is the only important feature.
What the design changes
The hook-and-loop pad makes abrasive changes straightforward, but the correct disc size and hole arrangement still matter for fit and collection. Keep the pad clean and replace damaged backing material when needed. A fresh disc of the right grit is often more useful than pressing harder on an exhausted abrasive.
The official specifications identify a collection port for 1-1/4- and 1-7/8-inch hoses. Connecting extraction can improve the working setup, though it partly gives back the untethered freedom of the battery tool. Decide whether the primary use is a quick mobile task or a longer bench session, because those scenarios favor different priorities.
The practical tradeoffs
This bare-tool version excludes the battery and charger. A buyer starting from nothing should compare the kit cost rather than the tool-only price. A pack already available in the workshop can make the sander attractive, but its weight and shape should still be considered when working on a vertical surface or narrow board.
The round pad is suitable for open surfaces and cannot fully reach an inside corner. It also does not replace a belt sander for rapid material removal. Plan the remaining hand work before buying, especially if the project has detailed trim or small recesses that dominate the sanding time.
Buying judgment
The PCL406B fits occasional general-purpose sanding where mobility and shared batteries matter more than speed adjustment. It is less compelling for a permanent bench with an extractor and outlet already in place. Choose it for the work location and existing system, with realistic expectations about abrasives, runtime planning and the fixed-speed format.
