Hornady TrekLite Lock Box XXL Review: A lightweight portable box for controlled storage

Review basis: This is a research-based editorial review of manufacturer documentation and published product specifications, not a hands-on test. Ratings reflect documented features and buying tradeoffs; performance claims are attributed to their sources.

The Hornady TrekLite Lock Box XXL is aimed at buyers who need a portable locked container without the weight of a large steel safe. Its polycarbonate body and compact rectangular format make it relevant to valuables that must be kept together and access-controlled. The strongest case for it is portability, provided the owner understands the limits of a small movable enclosure.

This review covers item 95260, the XXL version. Hornady's current catalog lists an exterior of 3.3 by 12.3 by 10.1 inches and an interior of 3.0 by 11.8 by 8.7 inches. Other TrekLite and Hornady lock boxes differ in dimensions, materials and locking arrangements, so the family name alone is not enough to identify the product.

Start with the contents and the storage location

Measure the actual items and allow room for the lining and closure. The available depth can be just as important as length and width, particularly when several objects are stacked. A box should close without forcing pressure onto the contents or obstructing the locking mechanism.

The lightweight body is convenient for moving between locations, but portability creates a different security proposition from an anchored safe. This review does not assign an independent burglary-resistance grade to the enclosure. Buyers whose main concern is substantial theft resistance should compare products designed and documented for that requirement.

If the box is used for firearms, Hornady's catalog directs owners not to store loaded firearms in its safes or lock boxes. Preventing access by unauthorized people and maintaining control of the lock credentials are essential parts of the storage arrangement. The container should be considered within that broader responsibility rather than as a reason to relax it.

Read the exact lock-box documentation

Hornady sells similar-looking boxes with different locks and cable specifications. Confirm the included components and operating instructions for item 95260 before purchase. Do not transfer features from the newer TSA-combination TrekLite model or a conventional steel Hornady Lock Box XL simply because a retailer places them in one comparison table.

Transport requirements also should be checked separately with the relevant authority and carrier. A travel-oriented label does not establish that every use, destination or packed configuration is permitted. That check is particularly important when the contents are subject to specific rules.

Inspect the body, hinge, closure and any supplied anchoring accessory as part of routine care. A damaged enclosure or unreliable closure should be addressed before the box is relied upon. Keep the instructions and product number available so that replacement or support requests refer to the correct version.

Our verdict favors the TrekLite XXL for a buyer who needs a portable, clearly dimensioned lock box and accepts its role as one part of controlled storage. It is less compelling when permanent anchoring, greater capacity or independently documented high-security construction is the priority.
