Aqara Smart Lock U100 Review: Several entry methods for a compatible deadbolt door
U100 is appealing for Apple Home Key households, but door fit and hub requirements should drive the decision.

Review basis: This is a research-based editorial review of manufacturer documentation and published product specifications, not a hands-on test. Ratings reflect documented features and buying tradeoffs; performance claims are attributed to their sources.
Convenience begins at the door
The Aqara Smart Lock U100 combines a fingerprint reader, keypad, Apple Home Key support and a mechanical-key option. That range of entry methods can be useful in a household where people prefer different ways to unlock the door. A phone-centric user and someone who prefers a code do not have to share the same routine. The purchase should nevertheless begin with the physical door. A smart lock is only convenient when the bolt operates smoothly and the existing preparation matches the manufacturer's installation requirements without forcing or improvised adjustments.
Check the exact installation
Aqara specifies compatibility with suitable wooden doors measuring 35–55mm thick, alongside its other bore and backset requirements. Measure the complete installation rather than relying on the general description of a standard deadbolt. Exterior trim, an adjacent storm door and the interior thumb-turn area can all affect clearance. A door that already requires lifting or pushing to engage its existing bolt should be corrected before adding a motorized lock. Automation cannot compensate for poor alignment, and repeated mechanical resistance would undermine the convenience that motivated the purchase.
Local entry and remote access differ
Fingerprint, code and key access are different from remotely managing the lock through a home system. Aqara specifies a compatible Zigbee 3.0 hub for its remote features and automations. Apple Home Key also has its own compatible-device and ecosystem requirements. These distinctions matter when estimating the complete cost. The lock is not a self-contained Wi-Fi product that automatically exposes every function to every platform. Decide whether the goal is easier local entry, remote guest management or a broader automation, then verify the supporting equipment for that particular use.
Household management matters
A keypad can reduce the need to distribute physical keys, but household access still requires sensible management of codes and permissions. The mechanical-key option provides another entry route, while battery status needs to remain part of ordinary maintenance. Automatic locking can be useful when configured appropriately, yet the household should understand how it behaves before relying on it. Test the installed operation with the door open and closed according to the instructions, then explain the agreed entry methods to everyone who uses the door regularly. Convenience is partly a shared routine, not only hardware.
Verdict
Choose U100 for a compatible door when its mixture of fingerprint, keypad and Apple Home Key entry will be used regularly. It is especially coherent for a household prepared to support the required hub and manage access deliberately. A simpler electronic lock may be sufficient if remote features are unnecessary, while an incompatible mortise or multipoint arrangement needs a different solution. The strongest reason to buy is easier everyday entry for the people who live there. Confirm measurements, clearance and ecosystem requirements before treating a long list of unlocking methods as a complete installation plan.
