Gaming Storage: Buy for the Installed Library, Not the Entire Catalogue
Storage planning is easier when you distinguish games you own from games you need installed today. A deliberately sized active library can reduce the cost and clutter of a new gaming system.

Make an installation list
Choose the games you play regularly, the one you are starting next and any title that must remain ready for family or friends. Check their current storage requirements and allow room for updates. Do not assume a download's initial size remains fixed indefinitely.
Verify the expansion format
Different systems support different storage technologies and requirements. Read the exact console or handheld documentation before buying a card or drive. Physical similarity does not establish compatibility, speed requirements or the ability to launch games directly from the expansion.
Valve specifies a microSD slot on Steam Deck OLED, while Nintendo provides separate requirements for Switch 2 expansion. Treat those as platform-specific choices rather than assuming an old card transfers every function unchanged.
Compare capacity with convenience
A larger drive can reduce reinstalling, which is useful on a slow or metered connection. A smaller drive may be sufficient for someone who finishes games and rotates the library. The right answer depends on the network and habits as much as the catalogue size.
Keep saves and account access in mind when removing games. Understand the platform's save-data and backup arrangements before deleting anything important. Installation storage and save backup are different jobs.
Choose capacity after defining the active library and the supported expansion path. Buying the largest option immediately can be sensible for some players, but it should be a deliberate convenience purchase rather than a default response to an enormous store catalogue.
