Refresh Rate and Frame Rate Are Different Gaming Specifications

A screen's maximum refresh rate tells you how often it can update, not how quickly every game will run. Keeping those two ideas separate makes handheld and monitor shopping more realistic.

Gaming & EntertainmentRefresh Rate and Frame Rate Are Different Gaming Specifications

A screen's maximum refresh rate tells you how often it can update, not how quickly every game will run. Keeping those two ideas separate makes handheld and monitor shopping more realistic.

Read the capability correctly

A display rated up to 90 or 120 Hz can show updates at those rates when the rest of the system and software provide them. A demanding game may render fewer frames. The highest number in the display specification is therefore a capability, not a universal performance promise.

Valve lists the Steam Deck OLED display at up to 90 Hz, while Nintendo specifies up to 120 Hz with variable refresh support for Switch 2's handheld display. Those figures do not establish a direct performance ranking across different games and settings.

Compare the same task

When evaluating performance information, look for the exact game, resolution, settings and power mode. A lighter title at reduced settings is not a fair proxy for a demanding game at a higher resolution. Check whether the comparison reports sustained performance or only a short peak.

Include the portable tradeoffs

Higher frame rates can change power demands, so consider the balance with battery runtime and the kind of game being played. A slower-paced game and a fast competitive title may lead the same player to different preferences.

Also consider text size, contrast, resolution and comfort. A display specification should support the overall experience rather than dominate it.

Use refresh rate as one part of a game-specific decision. Ask what performance is practical for the titles you care about, and choose settings that make the experience consistent. Buying the largest display number without that context can create expectations the software never promised.
