The Casio F-91W is attractive precisely because it asks so little of its owner. It offers basic digital timekeeping in a small resin watch rather than another connected device to charge and configure.

The proportions are the point

Casio lists a 38.2 by 35.2 by 8.5-millimeter case and a weight of 21 grams. Those figures make this a particularly useful option to compare if larger watches feel intrusive. The company gives an approximate seven-year battery life under its stated usage assumptions; actual life depends on how the watch is used.

The resin case, band and window keep the construction simple. They also mean the buyer should not expect the materials or finishing of a metal dress watch. The low weight is a concrete design advantage, while luxury appearance is plainly outside its purpose.

Understand the limits

Casio labels this version water resistant. That should not be stretched into a claim that it is a dive or swimming watch. Match intended water use to the manufacturer's guidance for the exact model, particularly if a secondhand watch has an uncertain service history.

The small display and controls merit an in-person check for anyone who finds fine text or compact buttons difficult. A minimal watch works best when reading the time is effortless for its wearer. A larger model may be a better buy even if it loses some of the F-91W's unobtrusive size.

Verdict

The F-91W is a clear choice for someone who wants basic timekeeping, low weight and long intervals between battery changes. It offers little reason to pay for a smartwatch when notifications and fitness features are unwanted. Choose it for its small, purposeful format, and choose a different watch when display size, richer materials or specific water-use ratings are more important.
