Sunscreen labels: read beyond the SPF number

Broad spectrum, water resistance and reapplication instructions belong in the same decision.

Health & BeautySunscreen labels: read beyond the SPF number

SPF is useful, but it is not the whole sunscreen label. A practical purchase starts with the setting: ordinary outdoor activity, water, sweating and the amount of exposed skin. Then compare protection characteristics and instructions together.

Look for the complete selection criteria

AAD recommends SPF 30 or higher, broad-spectrum protection and water resistance. Keep all three in the comparison. A familiar brand or a high number does not replace reading the other label statements, and a pleasant texture is useful only if the protection characteristics fit the intended use.

Water resistance has a time limit

Anthelios Melt-In Milk SPF 60 provides an example of an 80-minute water-resistance label. Its directions also require reapplication after towel drying and at least every two hours. The label’s conditions should be read as a set. Water-resistant does not mean waterproof or a single application for an entire day.

Buy enough usable product

Think about how many people will use the container and where it will travel. A package that is easy to carry and reopen can support a practical reapplication routine. Include sunscreen in the outing plan rather than treating it as an item to remember after leaving home.

Keep personal preference in its proper place

Texture, scent and the way a product works with the rest of a routine can affect consistent use. Compare a manageable initial size if you are trying something new. If there are known sensitivities or previous reactions, choose with appropriate professional advice instead of assuming a general recommendation overrides personal history.

The best purchase is a sunscreen with the needed label characteristics that can be used correctly and consistently. Keep shade and protective clothing in the plan as well. A higher SPF should not become a reason to ignore directions or extend time between applications.
