Bare tool or complete kit? Add up the first working purchase
Batteries, chargers and accessories can reverse an apparently simple price comparison.
A bare tool is a good deal only if it becomes a useful tool at a good total price. The distinction is especially important for a first cordless purchase. A drill without a battery, charger or suitable bits is an incomplete project budget even when the advertisement makes the body look like the whole product.
Inventory what you already own
Write down the exact battery platform and model numbers you have, then verify compatibility on the manufacturer’s documentation. Do not infer compatibility from similar colors, voltage labels or a battery that appears to slide into place. Existing compatible equipment can make a bare tool attractive, but assumptions can erase that advantage.
DEWALT explicitly sells the DCD794B without a battery and charger. Milwaukee’s 3404-20 contents list identifies the drill and belt clip. These examples show why the package suffix and contents list matter as much as the tool family. A similarly named kit may include a different battery size or number of packs.
Compare usable packages
For each option, list the body, batteries, charger, required accessories and storage. Choose battery capacity according to the work, not just the largest number. A bigger pack may help a long session while being awkward in a confined space. Two suitable packs can serve a different routine from one high-capacity pack.
Consider the next likely tool
A platform can be useful if it supports several purchases you actually expect to make. It is less useful as an excuse to buy a large bundle filled with tools you will rarely use. Put the next realistic project on paper and evaluate that requirement alongside the first one.
Keep the final comparison simple: total cost to complete the first job, usefulness of included items and the cost of an ordinary replacement. The best kit is the one that produces a coherent working setup, not necessarily the box containing the most pieces.
