Thule Motion 3 L Review: Roof Storage That Demands a Fit Check
The 440-liter roof box is most persuasive when bulky luggage, rather than heavy cargo, is the problem.

Who it suits
The Motion 3 L addresses an everyday road-trip problem: there may be enough seats for the family but not enough room for everyone’s bags. Moving bulky equipment to the roof can make the cabin more useful without changing vehicles. This is a particularly sensible category for occasional holidays because the carrier can be removed between trips. The tradeoff is another large object to install, store and keep within the vehicle’s load restrictions.
Capacity in context
Thule lists 440 liters of volume, external dimensions of 194 by 87 by 42 centimeters, and a 20-kilogram box weight. The stated box payload limit is 75 kilograms. That does not override the vehicle or rack limit: the system’s permissible load also has to account for the box and roof-rack equipment. Long objects deserve special attention because external length is not usable internal length.
Fit before features
The product uses Thule’s PowerClick mounting system and SlideLock closure. Those details matter after confirming rack compatibility and tailgate clearance. Thule publishes a front-clearance measurement specifically to help prevent contact between the hatch and box. Measure the actual vehicle rather than assuming that an SUV roof automatically has enough space. Also check total installed height against your garage and regular parking locations.
Verdict and alternatives
The Motion 3 L is a strong format for families carrying soft luggage or outdoor equipment that fits its internal dimensions. A smaller box may be easier to handle and store if the overflow is modest. A hitch-mounted solution may better suit a different vehicle or loading preference, but brings its own fit and access questions. Buy the cargo system around the objects you carry and the vehicle you own; capacity alone is a poor purchasing rule.
Editorial score rationale
The Motion 3 L scores well for a clearly defined road-trip role and the information available to plan fit. The ownership score reflects handling and storage commitments.
