The SureFire EP4 Sonic Defenders Plus are a compact alternative to over-ear hearing protectors for buyers who can obtain a reliable fit with reusable flanged earplugs. Their low-profile design is useful when an earmuff feels bulky or when several pieces of personal protective equipment must work together. The main purchasing decision is fit, followed by whether the reusable format suits the owner's care habits.

The EP4 uses a triple-flanged stem and an outer retention ring. SureFire offers small, medium and large sizes based on the dimensions of the outer ear's concha bowl. That means the size decision should follow the manufacturer's guidance rather than a generic assumption that one standard earplug size suits everyone.

The cap position changes the specification

SureFire lists a 24-decibel Noise Reduction Rating with the filter caps inserted. The open-filter configuration is different and should not be assigned that same rating. Follow the included instructions for the intended environment and do not remove the noise-reducing filter while expecting the product to retain its protective function.

A laboratory rating is not a personal measurement of sound exposure. An earplug that feels present in the ear may still be fitted poorly. For any setting requiring hearing protection, use appropriate fitting guidance and the relevant workplace or venue requirements. The EP4 should not be selected solely because its number looks similar to that of another product.

The low-profile body can be useful with compatible headwear or additional over-ear protection. However, combining products does not allow their NRR values simply to be added together. The practical question is whether all equipment can be worn correctly at the same time, without interference or pressure that causes repeated adjustment.

Reusable means a care routine

The supplied carrying case and lanyard make it easier to keep the pair together and separate from loose objects. They are especially useful for a product small enough to disappear into a bag. A dedicated storage routine also reduces the temptation to use a visibly dirty or damaged pair because no clean alternative is available.

The polymer components still require cleaning, inspection and eventual replacement according to SureFire's instructions. Reusability is not an indefinite service-life promise. Changes in flexibility, damage or an inability to obtain the intended fit are reasons to reassess the product rather than continue using it because it still looks mostly complete.

The EP4's filtered design offers more configuration choices than a basic foam plug, but those choices add responsibility. Someone who wants the simplest possible routine may prefer a different product with fewer parts or settings.

Our verdict favors the EP4 for buyers who value compactness, can confirm the correct size and will maintain a reusable pair carefully. It is less compelling when fit remains uncertain or the cap configuration is likely to be misunderstood. The editorial score reflects design and ownership practicality, not a guarantee of individual attenuation.
