Retractable Hose Reel Buying: Measure the Route and the Wall
The right hose length and a suitable mounting point must be chosen together.
Walk the route
Measure from the proposed reel location to the farthest watering point along the path the hose will actually follow. Corners, beds and furniture can add distance or create awkward pulling angles. A straight-line measurement across the lawn may underestimate the needed reach.
Check the mounting requirements
Read the manufacturer’s mounting drawing and instructions before ordering. Confirm wall construction, fixing requirements, clearance and access to the tap. Hozelock publishes model-specific drawings for its Auto Reel sizes, making this a practical pre-purchase check rather than an installation-day surprise.
Consider daily storage
The advantage of a retracting reel is a predictable place to put the hose away. Think about whether the location makes that routine easy and whether the reel obstructs a path or another garden task. If the hose needs to move among several water sources, a portable reel may be a better match.
Include seasonal care
Check the manufacturer’s frost and storage guidance for your climate. Inspect fittings and the hose as part of routine maintenance, and confirm regional tap compatibility when buying imported equipment. The best reel is the one that reaches the required places, mounts correctly and is easy enough to use that the hose gets stored properly after every session.
