The Matador 18L Packable Backpack is designed to solve the second-bag problem. You may want a full travel pack or suitcase in transit, then a smaller bag for a day out at the destination. This model folds into its own pocket, allowing it to travel inside the main luggage until the smaller capacity becomes useful.
Matador lists an 18-liter volume and a 255-gram weight. The appeal is therefore not maximum carrying capacity but a low penalty for bringing another usable bag. A light jacket, water, small camera pouch and everyday essentials are a more natural load than a dense laptop-and-books combination. The contents should match the pack's lightweight structure.
Better considered than a simple sack
The shoulder straps use Matador's LiteCush construction, intended to provide padding and breathability while remaining packable. A removable sternum strap and side compression straps help control the shape of the load. These details make the bag more purposeful than an unstructured promotional backpack, although they do not turn it into a substantial load-bearing hiking pack.
Two external bottle pockets are useful for sightseeing, while external zip pockets keep smaller items out of the main compartment. The high-visibility interior makes locating objects easier than a dark cavity. Organization is most useful when it remains restrained: fill every pocket with heavy objects and the advantage of a lightweight daypack quickly disappears.
The published dimensions are 46 by 25 by 19 centimeters. Matador describes the bag as compatible with many airlines' personal-item limits, but the manufacturer also acknowledges that policies vary. Check the exact ticket allowance and the packed dimensions. A full soft bag may bulge beyond its nominal shape, especially when bottles or bulky objects occupy the exterior pockets.
Weather protection with clear limits
The pack uses waterproof fabric and sealing exterior zippers, but Matador explicitly distinguishes the completed bag from a submersible waterproof design. Seams and openings are not intended for immersion. For an ordinary day in changeable weather that may be an appropriate compromise; for boating or protecting critical electronics from complete soaking, a different containment strategy is needed.
There is no dedicated padded laptop sleeve. A traveler carrying a computer must add suitable protection and consider whether the load is comfortable against the back. This is particularly important when the pack is otherwise lightly filled, because a hard object can become the dominant shape inside a flexible bag.
Our verdict favors the 18L Packable Backpack as a purposeful secondary travel bag. Its strap construction, external pockets and modest weight make sense for destination use. It is less compelling as a daily heavy commuter pack. Buy it when compact storage between outings is a real requirement, rather than expecting an ultralight folding design to replace every larger backpack.
