The Howard Leight Impact Sport is an electronic earmuff for someone who wants to hear ordinary surroundings while wearing hearing protection. Its communication features should be evaluated separately from the physical fit that makes the earmuff useful.

Features and limits

Howard Leight lists directional microphones, a 22 dB noise reduction rating, a folding design and an automatic shutoff after four hours. The selected One Nation version uses two AAA batteries. The electronic features support awareness, but an NRR is a laboratory rating, not a promise that every wearer receives the same reduction in every setting.

Fit must be checked with the other equipment actually worn. Glasses, hair and headwear can interfere with the seal around an ear. Adjusting the volume of amplified sound does not repair a poor seal.

Buying for the full environment

NIOSH recommends double hearing protection for impulse noise. At a range, that makes compatible earplugs, earmuffs and clear communication part of one selection process. Follow the range's rules and seek appropriate fitting guidance instead of deciding adequacy from the electronic feature list alone.

The automatic shutoff is a practical ownership feature for someone who forgets to turn equipment off after a session. Still, battery checks and a spare supply belong in the routine. Inspect cushions and the headband and use the manufacturer's approved replacement parts when service is needed.

Verdict

Impact Sport is a reasonable candidate when its fit works with the wearer's glasses and the environment's protection requirements. Its strongest consumer features are compact storage, familiar batteries and sound-management controls. It should not be bought on the assumption that electronics make all range noise safe. Build the complete protection arrangement around fit, the activity and qualified guidance; then compare convenience features.
