Read the operating mode behind the headline before comparing wireless headphones.

Electronics & AudioHeadphone Battery Claims: Music Time Is Not the Same as Call Time

Find the conditions

A runtime claim usually describes a specific operating mode. Noise cancellation, ambient listening, codec choice and volume can affect the result. Sony’s WH-1000XM6 specifications, for example, list different maximum figures for music and communication, and distinguish noise cancellation on from off. Compare equivalent modes rather than the largest number available for each model.

Describe your listening day

A commuter listening to music has different priorities from someone spending hours on calls. Write down the longest period you need between charging opportunities and whether a cable connection is useful as a fallback. A modest charging routine may matter more than buying the model with the highest advertised maximum.

Consider the other devices

Check multipoint behavior and the audio formats supported by your phone and computer. A codec listed on the headphones may not be available from every source. If switching between a work laptop and personal phone is the main task, connection management deserves at least as much attention as the codec list.

Leave room for fit

Battery specifications cannot tell you whether a headset is comfortable for the intended session length. Consider glasses, headband adjustment, ear-cup size and the packed case. Check return terms when a fit trial is not possible. The best battery figure has little practical value if the headphones spend most of the day off your head because the physical design does not suit you.
